Balloon-a-thon 2017: Give Flight! To the Fight against Lung Cancer in Women

Our 3rd balloon-a-thon was a tremendous success thanks to our donors, silent auction participants, Forum members, and volunteers. We are still tallying up the funds as donations continue to come in, however, at this point we have raised more than $27,000 for lung cancer research and the educational, advocacy, and patient support programming of the Women’s Lung Cancer Forum.

Read about the Balloon-a-thon in the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Bulletin here.

  • The 2009 and 2012 Beat Lung Cancer Balloon-a-thons raised thousands of dollars towards lung cancer research and to help expand ongoing projects of the Lung Cancer Forum such as “Out of the Shadows,” an educational conference with over 60 attendees; a DVD entitled “Living Well Beyond Lung Cancer” for patients; and a Pillow Initiative, which provides women and men who have undergone surgery for lung cancer with a cough pillow and inspiring stories from members of the forum. Participants donated balloons in honor of loved ones or to celebrate life after lung cancer. Each balloon represented a lung cancer patient who has inspired others with their courage.
  • Dr. Yolonda Colson was Upstate Lung Cancer’s 2012 Fan Award recipient. Fan Awards are given to individuals whose efforts have shown exceptional leadership in the area of lung cancer. Upstage Lung Cancer uses performing arts to raise awareness and funding for lung cancer research. The 2012 musical performance was  “Unforgettable: Celebrating the Voices of Nat King Cole and Rosemary Clooney – Two Voices Lost to Lung Cancer.”

Advocacy

The Forum and the Women’s Lung Cancer Program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital is a national leader in lung healthcare advocacy. We have organized advocacy and educational events to raise awareness of lung cancer in women including “Out of the Shadows,” an educational conference; a DVD entitled “Living Well Beyond Lung Cancer” for patients; a national multi-stakeholders conference “Identifying Barriers to Lung Cancer Care for Vulnerable Populations,” and two congressional hearings leading to national lung healthcare policy change affecting millions.

Read an NPR piece detailing the 2010 Out of the Shadows: Women and Lung Cancer movement.

To learn more about current and past advocacy initiatives (some of which the Forum has been involved with) please visit the Lung Cancer Alliance’s webpage on federal policy.
